How to Winterize a Hot Tub

January 8, 2020/by Gabe

Soaking in a hot tub while snow lightly falls around you is an incredible experience. However, if you’re in for a particularly nasty winter or your hot tub is at your vacation home, you’ll want to take the proper steps to winterize your hot tub. The process is straightforward and follows the same steps as cleaning and draining your hot tub.

Power Down

This step is crucial in how to winterize a hot tub. It’s not enough just to turn it off, you must completely power it down. Make sure that no electricity is reaching your tub. Failing to shut your hot tub down completely can put you and anyone helping you in serious danger.

Drain

Next, drain all the water from your hot tub by removing the drain cap and let the water run out. Remove any excess water from the shell with either a shop vac or towels. Depending on your hot tub model, you may need to remove the air blowers and drain them as well.

A key part of hot tub care during the winter is ensuring there is no leftover water in your system. Any water that remains in your hot tub over the winter can freeze and expand, damaging your hot tub. It’s a good idea to let your jets blow and loosen fittings to get all excess water out.

Remove and Clean Filters

To keep your filters protected during the winter, you’ll want to remove them and store them somewhere safe and dry. Ensure that you’ve carefully cleaned your filters prior to storage. You’ll also want to clean the filter basket.

Clean Shell

After you’ve removed the filters, give the shell a thorough cleaning. It’s recommended that you use a spa cleaner, non-abrasive sponges, and soft cloths or towels. You’ll also want to clean your hot tub cover.

Cover and Store

Once your hot tub has been cleaned, securely place the cover over it and lock it down. This will keep your hot tub clean and protected during the winter months. When it’s springtime again, just take the cover off, fill it up, and enjoy it all over again.
