How to Store Outdoor Patio Furniture in the Winter

How to Store Outdoor Patio Furniture in the Winter

December 8, 2018/by Gabe

Outdoor furniture can be wonderful in the summertime, whether you are basking in the sun or doing some other outdoor activity to take advantage of the warm weather. However, winter will inevitably come, and when it does, you’ll have to worry about protecting your furniture from the harsh elements.

Here are 3 tips on how to store your outdoor patio furniture in winter.

Put Away Your Outside Patio Furniture

Perhaps the best method on how to store outdoor patio furniture in winter is to simply put it away. Storing your furniture in a shed or outdoor garage is a simple way to protect furniture from bad weather or other environmental damage. Protecting your patio furniture inside your home can also work, if you have space.

If you don’t have space on your property, you could always rent a storage unit. Storage units can be very effective in protecting your furniture during the harsh winter months. Some units even come with climate control, helping prevent any damage associated with weather. The downside, of course, is that storage units cost money.

Cover Your Outdoor Patio Furniture

If you don’t have a way to store your outdoor furniture in winter, there are other ways to cover your furniture to protect it from rain, snow, or sleet. Covers don’t have to be expensive, and can be as simple as using a tarp purchased from your local hardware store.

There are also waterproof furniture bags available, which may work better than a makeshift tarp. Either way, your outside patio furniture will have some protection.

Add a Protective Layer to Your Patio Furniture

Worse comes to worst, you can add protective layers to your outdoor patio furniture in winter for protection. Cushions can be treated with a fabric protector while metal furniture can be treated with a weather resistant coat of paint. You can apply wax to wicker furniture to help water slide off easier.

All in all, it’s recommended that you store or cover your outdoor patio furniture in winter, as that will usually yield better results.
